Who is a Brahmin - Swami Vivekananda's view

(The Complete Works of Swamy Vivekananda - Volume 3 - Lectures from Colombo to Almora)

The Brahminhood is the ideal of humanity in India, as wonderfully put forward by Shankaracharya at the beginning of his commentary on the Gitâ, where he speaks about the reason for Krishna's coming as a preacher for the preservation of Brahminhood, of Brahminness.  That was the great end. This Brahmin, the man of God, he who has known Brahman, the ideal man, the perfect man, must remain; he must not go.

It is the duty of the Brahmin, therefore, to work for the salvation of the rest of mankind in India. If he does that, and so long as he does that, he is a Brahmin, but he is no Brahmin when he goes about making money. You on the other hand should give help only to the real Brahmin who deserves it; that leads to heaven. But sometimes a gift to another person who does not deserve it leads to the other place, says our scripture.

I sought help from the then Bihar Government. But, nobody helped me and I could not fulfil my dream"! This failure sprouted a faint flicker of hope and the hope became a dream. This dream has not only come true for him but for many who dared not to dream big. Today Anand Kumar is the proud brain behind Super 30, the free IIT coaching centre for talented poor students in Patna which has been hitting the national headlines two years in a row for its 100 per cent success rate.

Vaikunta Ekadashi

Vaikunta Ekadashi

The Ritual
Ekadashi is the 11th day of every fortnight of Hindu month. Every month is divided into 2 fortnights - Shukla Paksha and Krishna PakshaEkadashi is the 11th day in each of these Pakshas - Ekadashi means 11 in Samskrita. Vaikunta Ekadasi, is considered to be the most important Ekadasi in "Sri Vaishnava" tradition. Vaikunta Ekadasi occurs during the month of Margashira and is an important festival dedicated to Lord Vishnu (In Solar Calendar, this occurs during the Ekadashi of Dhanurmasa Sukla Paksha). According to Vishnu Purana, observing the Ekadasi Vrata on Vaikunta Ekadasi day confers the benefit equivalent to observing all the 23 Ekadasis of the Hindu Calendar year.
